A ceremony of "liberty and unity"

On the 100th birthday of former president Ulrich Ilg (7th April), the restoration 60 years ago of the Land of Vorarlberg and of the Republic of Austria was commemorated in the Landhaus in Bregenz by a ceremony of "liberty and unity". The addresses given by president Sausgruber and president of the parliament Halder emphasised the mood of fresh departure at that time. "Without the Länder it was not possible to form a new state. The fact that the federalists won in the Länder convention in September 1945 is not least of all due to the commitment of Ulrich Ilg. The convention paved the way to unity in liberty, a generation before our northern neighbours and to the restoration of the Republic of Austria as a federal state," in Sausgruber's words. Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel was present at the ceremony to give a speech on the subject of "Austria: present and future".
