No cuts in welfare provision

The President of the Vorarlberg State Parliament Gebhard Halder warned against making cuts in welfare provision at a meeting of the expert committee Economic and Social Policy of the EU Committee of the Regions. Halder spoke out against French demands for a Europe-wide statutory framework on social security, saying this would inhibit local and regional freedom of movement in the provision of welfare benefits. He emphasised Vorarlberg's very high standards of welfare provision which are tailored to meet regional needs. "Regulations from Brussels must not undermine these standards," he observed. The expert committee's report will be on the agenda at the next CoR plenary session in December.
